Bicycle Accidents in California
Patterns in bicycle accidents reveal that 961 individuals lost their lives in collisions with motor vehicles in one recent year. While there has been a 4% decrease in bicyclist deaths since 1975, there has been a concerning 55% increase since their lowest recorded point in 2010. Notably, the majority of bicyclist fatalities in 2021 (90%) occurred among individuals aged 20 and older. Unfortunately, there are also many instances where bicyclists are left with severe injuries that change their lives indefinitely. With so many people utilizing bicycles here in California, it is no secret that these accidents take place far too often. In many cases, bicyclists are hurt in accidents due to the reckless actions of other drivers. Some of the most common bicycle accidents reported in our state include:
- Single-bike accidents
- Pothole incidents
- Left-cross accidents
- Doorings (collisions with opened car doors)
- T-bone collisions
- Intersection collisions
- Sideswipes
It is undeniable that bicycle accidents can be quite devastating. Like pedestrians, individuals on bicycles have very little protection during accidents. As a result, they are likely to suffer severe injuries that affect their lives forever. Common injuries reported in bicycle collisions include:
- Fractured bones
- Contusions and bruises
- Road rash
- Sprains and strains
- Spinal cord injuries
