San Diego, CA – Austin Machitar Killed in Clairemont Mesa Blvd Crash

San Diego, CA (August 28, 2024) – A police officer in San Diego lost his life following a motor vehicle collision that occurred Monday evening, August 26.

At around 11:30 p.m., a vehicle was traveling down Clairemont Mesa Boulevard at a high rate of speed. After being spotted by law enforcement, police attempted to pursue the vehicle. While traveling forward, the car collided with a patrol cruiser, which was occupied by two officers in the 5200 block of the road. One of the officers, identified as 30-year-old Austin Machitar, was fatally injured in the accident. The suspect in the other vehicle also passed away from their injuries. One additional victim, identified as Officer Zachary Martinez, was severely injured and rushed to an area hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition. At this time, the incident is under investigation.
